Tuffy’s Trove, 10 June 2019

Tuffy’s Trove, acrylic on Gessod wooden board, 10 June 2019, 24x36in
This painting was extremely fun to create since we had so much artistic freedom. I wanted to do a landscape painting, and I wanted to draw inspiration from my favorite anime artist, Hayao Myazaki. The creature that I created for this piece is named Tuffy, and I created it with different style brushstrokes in order to make it look fussy, rather than furry. I used Gelkyd on the water as a medium in order to add shine and evenness. For the underpainting, I painted the dark areas and the trees in pure black, and I used black for Tuffy’s underpainting. I worked the brown acrylic over the black and used it as natural shadow. One of my favorite details in this piece is the way I accomplished Tuffy’s foot dipping in the water, and the trees’ reflection.

Detail- Tuffy’s Tove
This is one of my favorite details of the piece because it really exemplifies the techniques I used to replicate nature. I tried to create a mossy flowery cover over the trees, and I used stippling in order to achieve this. I also wanted moss to hang over the tree holes, so I used small amounts of paint and light strokes to accomplish that detail.
